What is the UAH Capital Management Group?

The UAH CMG is a group of students entrusted by the Tennessee Valley Authority to invest $100,000 in the stock market. We compete with student groups at 18 other universities in the TVA distribution area to provide the highest returns.

The 3-hour course is available to a limited number of students. Students must receive permission of the instructor, Dr. John Burnett, to enroll in the course.  The course substitutes for FIN 461, Portfolio Management.

Students must either be business majors or have experience investing in the stock market.

What is the Goal of the Capital Management Group?

The UAH Capital Management Group seeks long-term growth of capital by investing in U.S. common stocks with a risk profile similar to the risk profile of the S&P BARRA Growth Index.  Our performance results and investment characteristics will be evaluated relative to an overall measure of the large domestic equity universe and a universe of professionally managed large core-oriented equity managers and other universities managing the TVA decommissioning funds.

Specifically, we strive to meet or exceed the following performance objectives:

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes)Outperform the S&P BARRA Growth Index over a one-year horizon.  Over a 3- to 5-year horizon, the portfolio is expected to generate a total return of at least 100 basis points over the S&P BARRA Growth Index.

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes)Generate a total return that ranks in the top 50% of the Wilshire Large Core Equity Manager Universe

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes)Generate a total return that ranks in the top 15% of the University Manager Universe over a 1- to 3-year horizon.

Investment Policies

Under normal market conditions, the UAH Capital Management Group seeks capital appreciation from an actively managed portfolio of common stocks issued by a diversified group of domestic companies. Dividend income, if any, is a consideration incidental to the capital appreciation objective. The companies in which the CMG invests normally (but not always) have strong earnings potential. Most of the CMG's assets will be invested in U.S. common stocks within the S&P BARRA Growth Index.

The CMG will track its performance relative to the S&P 500 Index, the S&P/BARRA Growth Index, and the eighteen other universities participating in the TVA Investment Challenge. We operate under the following constraints:

Asset Allocation YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) No more than 5% of the fund will be in cash equivalents.
Diversification YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes)  The maximum allocation to any economic sector (as defined by S&P) may not exceed the sector weight of the selected benchmark index plus 10%.

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) The maximum allocation to any one sector may not exceed 40% of portfolio assets, unless the sector weight of the selected benchmark exceeds 40%, in which case the maximum weight to the sector would be 110% of the sector weight.

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) At time of purchase, no single issue should exceed 5% of the portfolio's market value for portfolios in excess of $150,000 in value and 8% of the portfolio's value for portfolios equal to or less than $150,000 in value.  Positions may be allowed to drift up to 8% (for portfolios values above $150,000) and to 10% (for portfolios values at $150,000 or less).  No time frame is given.

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) The portfolio is expected to be constructed with a minimum of 20 individual stocks for portfolios of more than $150,000 in market value and 15 individual stocks for portfolios of $150,000 or less in market value.

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) Investments in Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) should not exceed 5% of the portfolio at any time.

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) American Depository Receipts (ADRs) may be used in the portfolio but are restricted to 15% of the portfolio's market value.  The 15% limitation includes foreign securities traded on U.S. exchanges that are not ADRs.

Market Capitalization YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) The majority of the portfolio is expected to be invested in well-established large market capitalization companies.  Therefore, the average market capitalization of the portfolio is expected to be above $10 billion.

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) The portfolio may also invest in less established small capitalization companies.  No more than 35% of the portfolio may be invested in small capitalization stocks.  Small capitalization is defined as less than $1 billion in capitalization.  Companies with a market capitalization of less than $250 million at time of purchase are prohibited.  Positions that drift below $250 million after purchase shall be reported to TVA and monitored carefully.  The portfolio shall not have more than 5% invested in securities that have drifted below $250 million.

Prohibited Transactions YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) No investing in stocks of electric utility companies or independent power producers

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) No fixed income securities

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) No non-marketable securities

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) No non-dollar denominated securities

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) No commingled funds (including mutual funds)

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) No convertible or preferred securities

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) No warrants or commodities

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) No buying on margin or short-selling. No investing in derivatives of any kind.

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) No swaps or securities lending.

TVA Notification Policy TVA must be informed within 24 hours if any of the following events occur:

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) A change in investment philosophy that represents a deviation from this policy statement.

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) A change in investment style that represents a deviation from this policy statement.

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) Any development in the ability of Manager to manage the portfolio either in accordance with the standards of a prudent investment manager or within the context of this statement of investment policy.

YELLBALL_SM_1.GIF (326 bytes) Any situation that has the potential to impact either the professionalism, financial position, or the integrity of either TVA or Manager.
