Holistic Grading of
Writing and Analysis Assignments
| The entries below describe how a professor assigns grades for projects requiring analysis and writing. I quote it here from Financial Practice & Education, Spring/Summer 1995, p. 110.
Level 5 Student demonstrates a thorough understanding of the subject matter and the ability to effectively communicate this knowledge. The student uses examples, diagrams, statistics, etc. to develop his or her ideas and to aid the reader. The writing supplies evidence that supports the paper's thesis and also conveys the author's reasoning and justifications. This paper is well organized, has a consistent point of view and mood, and is free of distracting grammatical, spelling, and typographical errors. Level 4 Student demonstrates an understanding of the subject matter and includes accurate words, facts, and figures. While the paper is polished and attractive, it lacks a complete development of ideas in an organized, coherent way. For example, the student may list statistics but fail to synthesize material; or the writing may lack effective order, coordination, and subordination of the ideas. Level 3 Student shows a minimal understanding of the subject matter. Often the student, though able to define terms relating to the subject in his or her own words (translate materials), is unable to apply this knowledge to a particular situation. Student may fail to draw obvious conclusions from data presented or may draw conclusions that are not supported by facts. Paper may not be well organized and may contain some grammatical, spelling, and typographical errors. Level 2 Student communicates only a minimal knowledge of the assigned subject matter. The student is able to recite definitions relating to the subject matter (basically memorization) but is unable to translate, interpret, or extrapolate. The paper lacks effective and appropriate examples. The writer fails to maintain focus and appears to be unclear as to the purpose of his or her paper. Paper may be poorly organized or contain grammatical errors that distract the reader and prevent effective communication. Level 1 Student does not demonstrate an understanding of the assigned task or subject matter. Paper contains many severe grammatical errors and is incoherent.
