Marketing allows those students with interests in developing and promoting products and services to gain the knowledge and skills needed to pursue a range of careers with a focus on marketing. These positions include product managers, market researchers, advertisers, contract negotiators, product design coordinators, logistics managers and many more. Since marketing is such a diverse area, the curriculum has been divided into four concentrations: Marketing Management, Supply Chain Management, Acquisition Management, and E-Business.
Marketing Managers are responsible for the total development process for new products, services and businesses. In addition, there is a focus on research and customer analysis to determine customer needs and what motivates them to purchase specific products. Many marketing positions can be found in a variety of local and national companies, such as Ford, Texaco, Dynetics, Intergraph, Adtran, AT&T, and Teledyne Brown Engineering.
Supply Chain Managers are involved in planning, implementing, and controlling the operations of the supply chain. There are many positions in supply chain management, which include coordinating the transportation and logistics functions with channel partners, demand planning and forecasting, and advising project managers on supply chain issues. All companies that deal with products and services have a supply chain to manage; hence, there are many career possibilities for individuals with supply chain expertise.
Acquisition Managers main responsibility is to negotiate major purchase orders and contracts with both suppliers and customers. This includes contract research and development, administration, risk management, and monitoring performance. They negotiate the best terms for the company and coordinate the acquisition process with members of the supply chain. This is a great career path since many firms need professionals to manage their large acquisitions which may cost millions or billions of dollars.
E-business is simply the business processes that take place over the internet. Electronic commerce is exploding, and will continue to increase as the internet becomes more and more secure. Businesses marketing over the internet must include unique strategies that differ from traditional marketing strategies. This requirement creates many career opportunities with internet companies, as well as, traditional firms that include the web in their marketing program.
