Admission to the MS-MIS program is competitive. It is expected that successful applicants will show high promise of success in graduate study in MIS and hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution. Admission is based on consideration of qualitative and quantitative factors related to the applicant's educational preparation and proven ability to perform academic work at a superior level. These factors also are indicative of a candidate's potential for a high level of performance. Additional admission information is provided below.
Program prerequisites include a bachelors degree in any field and computer proficiency in an operating system and an office suite. While the proficiency can be achieved through self study or non-credit training courses, the expected level of proficiency is comparable to that obtained by students completing MIS146 Computer Applications in Business.
The remaining course prerequisites are:
The communication requirement may be filled by a professional writing or speaking course beyond the freshman level. It cannot be filled by a freshman composition or writing intensive course. The key is advanced organizational skills for communications with professionals. Hence communications courses intended for professional groups, such as engineers, managers, or scientists are acceptable. UAH courses filling the communications requirement include CM313 Business and Professional Communication, EH300 Strategies for Business Writing, and EH301 Technical Writing.
Applicants with an undergraduate degree in MIS will likely have completed all prerequisites. Applicants with degrees in other areas will likely have completed two or three of these course prerequisites.
A student who has completed a prerequisite with acceptable grades is not required to repeat the prerequisite. However, the student is encouraged to consult with faculty (and even take an appropriate examination) to evaluate his or her preparation, especially if the prerequisite work was completed several years prior to entering the program or if minimum grades were earned. A student may enroll for credit or audit in courses in which the student needs review.
Applicants lacking adequate background will be required to complete the MS-MIS program prerequisites prior to enrolling in 600 level MIS courses.

The minimum admission requirements include an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution, a GMAT score of 480, and an acceptable admission index based upon the undergraduate grade-point average and performance on the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). The minimum admission index is 1050. It is based on the formula 200 times the overall undergraduate grade-point average (based on a 4.0 scale) plus the GMAT score. Applicants meeting these requirements are not guaranteed admission into the MS MIS program. In making the admission decision, consideration is given to additional information such as the applicant's baccalaureate program of study, verbal skills, quantitative skills, writing skills, evaluations by former teachers and professionals in the field, professional experience, and the availability of space in the program.
The program will also adhere to college policy on other admissions criteria, such as TOEFL scores for international students whose native language is not English.
